Turkey : Initiation of a Safeguard Proceeding Concerning Certain Electrical Appliances
According to a communication just circulated by the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Undersecretariat for Foreign Trade of Turkey (the Authority) has initiated a safeguard investigation on imports of certain electrical appliances, irrespective of the products' country of origin. Interested parties should make themselves known in writing and submit their views and questionnaire replies, or any other information to the Authority within 30 days from 19 December 2007. They can also apply to be heard within 30 days from 19 December 2007. The questionnaires (in Turkish) can be obtained from the Authority's web page at http://www.dtm.gov.tr. All submissions and requests must be made in writing indicating the name, address, e-mail address, and telephone and fax numbers of the interested parties and should be sent to the following address :

BACKGROUND

The Authority initiated the proceeding on the basis of a safeguard petition lodged by Turkish industry. Information available to the Authority indicates that there has been sharp increase in import of the products concerned both in absolute terms and relative to domestic production or consumption, and reduction in domestic production, sales volume, market share and profitability.
