Commercial Information Circular No. 27/2007

European Union (EU)* : Amendments to the Directive on Labelling of Foodstuffs

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 10/2004 of 12 January 2004, the European Commission has adopted a Directive to amend the Directive 2000/13/EC on the labelling of foodstuffs. Details are set out in Commission Directive 2006/142/EC (the Directive), copy (pdf format) of which is attached to this Circular for reference.

  2. Based on recent scientific knowledge, cases of allergic reactions have been reported for food containing lupin and molluscs. In this regard, lupin, molluscs and products thereof have been added to Annex IIIa of Directive 2000/13/EC which sets out a list of ingredients that must appear on labelling of foodstuffs. EU Member States are required to adopt laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with this Directive by 23 December 2007.
