Commercial Information Circular No. 19/2007

European Union (EU)* : Control on Food Additives and Sweeteners

Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 319/2006 of 21August 2006, European Commission recently adopted Directives 2006/128/EC and 2006/129/EC amending the purity criteria concerning sweeteners and food additives other than colours and sweeteners respectively. Copies of the Directives are attached at Annexes A and B (pdf format) of this circular for reference.

Due to the adoption of Directive 2006/52/EC on new provisions on sweeteners and food additives other than colours and sweeteners, errors in the original Directives and new scientific knowledge on various food additives, it is necessary to amend Directives 95/31/EC and 96/77/EC concerning the specific purity criteria on sweeteners and food additives other than colours and sweeteners respectively for use in foodstuffs. Details are set out in the Annex of the respective Directives 2006/128/EC and 2006/129/EC. EU Member States shall bring into force the laws, regulations and administrative provisions to comply with these Directives by 15 February 2008.
