Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 197/2005
European Union (EU)* : Community Eco-label Award Scheme
Further to Commercial Information Circular No. 93/2003 of 1 April 2003, the European Commission (the Commission) has adopted a Decision to establish the ecological criteria for lubricants under the Community Eco-label Award Scheme (the Scheme). Details are set out in Commission Decision 2005/360/EC (the Decision), a copy( pdf format )of which is attached to this circular for reference.
DETAILS
- Under the Decision, the product group "lubricants" is defined to comprise hydraulic oils, greases, chainsaw oils, two stroke oils, concrete release agents and other total loss lubricants, for use by consumers and professional users. To qualify for the Community eco-label, the product concerned must meet specific ecological criteria on certain areas including aquatic toxicity requirements, biodegradability and bioaccumulative potential, and technical performance. The ecological criteria will be valid until 31 May 2009.
- With the adoption of the ecological criteria for lubricants, the number of product groups (excluding those in the service sector) covered by the Scheme has expanded to twenty-one (viz. laundry detergents, light bulbs, washing machines, copying and graphic paper, refrigerators, tissue paper products, dishwashers, soil improvers, indoor paints and varnishes, bed mattresses, textile products, footwear, personal computers, portable computers, detergents for dishwashers, all-purpose cleaners and cleaners for sanitary facilities, hand dishwashing detergents, televisions, hard floor coverings, vacuum cleaners and lubricants). Traders may visit the Commission¡¦s Eco-label web-site at http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/ecolabel/index_en.htm for information on the Scheme and details of the ecological criteria for the different product groups.
