Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 263/2004

European Union (EU)* : Community Eco-label Award Scheme

Further to Commercial Information Circular No.96/2004 of 20 April 2004, the European Commission has revised the ecological criteria and their validity period for the award of the Community eco-label to refrigerators in order to reflect the developments on the market. Details are set out in Commission Decision 2004/669/EC (the Decision), a copy of which is attached (pdf format) to this circular for reference.

DETAILS

  1. Under the Decision, the product group "refrigerators" is defined to comprise all electric, mains-operated household refrigerators, frozen food storage cabinets, food freezers and their combinations. Appliances that may also use other energy sources, such as batteries, are excluded. To qualify for the Community eco-label, an appliance must comply with the revised ecological criteria on certain areas including energy savings, user instructions and noise emissions. For full details of the criteria, please refer to the Annex (pdf format) of the Decision. The product group definition and the revised ecological criteria have taken effect on 1 May 2004 and will be valid until 31 May 2007.
  1. To allow sufficient time for producers to adapt to the revision, eco-label awarded to this group of product before 1 May 2004 may continue to be used until 31 October 2005. For applications of eco-label made before 1 May 2004, eco-label may be awarded under the terms of the previous ecological criteria. In these cases, eco-label so awarded may be used until 31 October 2005.
