Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 87/02

The European Commission (EC) has adopted Commission Directive 2002/31/EC (at Annex (pdf format)) implementing the provisions of the Council Directive 92/75/EEC of 22 September 1992 with regard to the energy labelling of household air-conditioners.

DETAILS

  1. The Commission Directive applies to certain electric mains operated household air-conditioners. Appliances that can also use other energy sources, air-to-water and water-to-water appliances as well as units with an output (cooling power) greater than 12 kW are excluded. Under the Directive, information relating to the consumption of energy shall be brought to consumers' attention by means of a product fiche and a label to be placed on the outside of the front or top of the appliance in such a way as to be clearly visible. Such labels and product fiches are required to contain specified information and be prepared in specific format. In cases of mail order or other distance selling where the potential customers cannot see the appliance displayed, the mail order catalogue, advertisements, etc. should contain specified information on energy consumption.

  2. Member States are required to apply the Directive with effect from 1 January 2003. As a transitional measure, Member States shall permit, until 30 June 2003, the placing on the market of products and the distribution of sales communications which do not conform with the provisions of the Directive.
