European Union (EU)*:Restrictions on the Marketing and Use of Certain Dangerous Substances - Organostannic Compounds

The European Commission (EC) has adopted a Directive to tighten the existing control on the marketing and use of organostannic compounds which act as biocides in anti-fouling systems. Member States are required to transpose the Directive into their national laws by 31 October 2002 at the latest and put into effect the provisions of the Directive on 1 January 2003.

DETAILS

  1. Commission Directive 2002/62/EC and the corresponding corrigenda (at Annex I and II (pdf format) respectively) set out the revised restrictions on organostannic compounds. Under the Directive, organostannic compounds may not be -

    1. placed on the market for use as substances and constituents of preparations when acting as biocides in free association paint;
       

    2. placed on the market or used as substances and constituents of preparations to prevent fouling on all craft, any appliance or equipment used for fish or shellfish farming, and any submerged appliance or equipment;
       

    3. used as substances and constituents of preparations intended for use in the treatment of industrial waters.
