Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 130/02

European Union (EU)* : Directive on Energy Labelling of Household Electric Ovens

The European Commission (EC) has adopted a Commission Directive 2002/40/EC at Annex (pdf foramt) implementing the provisions of the Council Directive 92/75/EEC of 22 September 1992 with regard to the energy labelling of household electric ovens.

DETAILS

  1. The Commission Directive applies to certain electric mains operated household electric ovens including ovens being part of larger appliances. Portable ovens, ovens that can also use other energy sources, and those which do not fall within the scope of the harmonised standards as stipulated in Article 2 of the Directive are excluded. Under the Directive, information relating to the consumption of energy shall be brought to consumers' attention by means of a product fiche and a label to be placed on the door of the appliance in such a way as to be clearly visible. For multi-cavity ovens, each cavity shall have its own label. Such labels and product fiches are required to contain specified information and be prepared in specific format. In cases of mail order or other distance selling where the potential customers cannot see the appliance displayed, the mail order catalogue, advertisements, etc. should contain specified information on energy consumption. This requirement also applies to offers for built-in ovens for integrated kitchens.

  2. Member States are required to apply the Directive with effect from 1 January 2003. As a transitional measure, Member States shall permit, until 30 June 2003, the placing on the market of products and the distribution of sales communications which do not conform with the provisions of the Directive.
