Malaysia : Import Measures on Foods containing
Acid-Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)

The Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health of Malaysia has announced in a notification to World Trade Organization dated 26 July 2001 certain import measures regulating the content of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) in foods containing acid-HVP.

  1. Effective from 1 August 2001, all foods containing acid-HVP (for example, certain soy sauce and oyster sauce) entering Malaysia should comply with the following requirements:

  1. a legal limit of 0.02mg/kg for 3-MCPD in foods containing HVP, a legal limit of 1mg/kg for 3-MCPD in acid-HVP; and

  2. all imported acid-HVP and foods containing HVP must be accompanied by a Health Certificate from the competent authority stating the level of 3-MCPD detected.
