Commercial Information Circular No. 1058/2013

Chile : Modifications to Phytosanitary Measures for Wood Packaging Materials

The Chilean government issued Exempt Resolution No. 7008/2013 on 16 November 2013 to modify the phytosanitary measures for wood packaging materials.

2. The modifications to the phytosanitary measures are:

  1. Irrespective of the type of treatment applied, the wood packaging materials of a thickness exceeding 5mm used for transport of any consignment, coming from abroad or temporarily in the territory, including wood of cargo stowage, must be made of debark wood and is treated in the country of origin of the wood. Visually separated and clearly distinct small pieces of bark may remain if they are less than 3 cm in width (regardless of the length), or exceeding 3 cm in width with the total surface area of an individual piece of bark less than 50 square centimetres.
  1. Dielectric heating is approved for treatment for wood packaging materials. When dielectric heating is used (e.g., microwave), wood packaging materials composed of wood not exceeding 20 cm when measured across the smallest dimension of the piece or the stack, shall be heated to a minimum temperature of 60°C for one continuous minute throughout the whole section of the wood (including its surface). The prescribed temperature must be reached within 30 minutes from the start of the treatment.
