Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 734/2012

Chile: Phytosanitary Risk Classification of Imported Products

The Chilean Government issued a Resolution No. 3589/2012 on 19 June 2012 to classify imported products according to their phytosanitary risks. The Resolution classifies imported products in accordance with their capacity to introduce and disperse known pests, taking into account whether the product has been processed, the method and degree of processing, and the intended use of the product.

2. Imported products are classified into four categories which are set out in the Resolution. Imported products under all four categories must be assessed by the Agricultural and Livestock Service (or "Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero" in Spanish) (SAG) at the port of entry for respective importation procedures. For products under categories 1 and 2, the SAG may request information from phytosanitary authority in the country of origin regarding the method and degree of processing. Products under categories 2 to 4 must be accompanied by an official and original phytosanitary certificate issued by the phytosanitary authority in the country of origin, and have to comply with all phytosanitary requirements established by the SAG. Any other products not included in the four categories but may pose a phytosanitary risk must be imported into Chile in compliance with all applicable phytosanitary requirements.

3. For details, traders are advised to consult their importers in Chile and/or the above Chilean Resolution (in Spanish), which is available at: http://www.leychile.cl/Navegar?idNorma=1041758
