Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 579/2012
Chile: Nutritional Information on Food Labels
The Chilean Government issued a Law No. 20606/2012 on 6 June 2012 to require manufacturers, importers and distributors of food products to include in the packaging or labels all product ingredients, including each additive shown in descending order of quantities, as well as nutritional information expressed as a percentage of composition, unit weight or as required in the existing regulations. The information on food labels shall include at least the energy, sugar, sodium and saturated fat contents of the food products, and shall indicate if the products contain or have used in the manufacturing process soy, milk, peanuts, eggs, seafood, fish, gluten or dried fruits. The Law has come into effect on 7 June 2012.
2. The Ministry of Health of Chile will determine the shape, size, proportion, colour, characteristic and contents of the food labels, to ensure that the required information is visible and easily understood by consumers. It will also identify food products that contain a high level or calories, fat, sugar, salt or any other ingredients, which shall be labelled as of "high calorie content", "high salt content", etc.
3. For details, traders are advised to consult their importers in Chile and/or the above Chilean Law (in Spanish), which is available at: http://www.chilecrecesano.com/medios/noticias/2012/julio/
