Commercial Information Circular No. 385/2012

MERCOSUR (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) : Technical Regulations on Supplementary Nutritional Information in Food Products

The Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, issued a Resolution No. 1/2012 to establish technical regulations on supplementary nutritional information contained on the labels of the packaged food produced and sold in the MERCOSUR. The technical regulations will come into effect on 1 January 2014. 

2. Supplementary nutritional information is any representation which states, suggests or implies that the food contains particular nutritional properties, especially, but not limited to, relating to its energy value and/or its content in proteins, fats, carbohydrates, dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals. It includes (1) total nutrient content and/or energy value; (2) comparative nutritional and/or energy value declarations; (3) portion size; (4) semi-prepared or readily-made food; (5) omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids; (6) reference food; (7) cholesterol; and (8) sugars.
