Commercial Information Circular No. 125/2012

Brazil : Conformity Certification Requirements for Microwave Ovens

The National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil issued Directive No. 497/2011 to establish conformity certification requirements for microwave ovens. The Directive (in Portuguese) is available at: http://www.inmetro.gov.br/legislacao/rtac/pdf/RTAC001772.pdf.

2.The Directive requires microwave ovens to be certified using certification System 5 or System 7, and carry a National Energy Conservation Label (Etiqueta Nacional de Conservação de Energia, ENCE) under the Brazilian Labelling Programme (Programa Brasileiro de Etiquetagem, PBE). The conformity certification for microwave ovens must be carried out by a Product Certification Body (Organismo de Certificação de Produto, OCP) accredited by the INMETRO. 
 

3.For microwave ovens covered by the certification requirements, the compliance dates will be as follows:

	Compliance Date	Application Criteria
(i)	30 December 2012	manufacture and import of such products
(ii)	30 June 2013	domestic sale of such products by manufacturers and importers
(iii)	30 June 2014	domestic sale of such products by all other parties

4.For details of the above certification requirements, traders are advised to consult their importers in Brazil and/or the above Brazilian Directive.
