Brazil : Requirements on the Mandatory Information on the Packaging of Various Low Voltage Electrical Products

The Brazilian Government issued Decree No. 335/2011 regarding the requirements on the mandatory information on the packaging of various low voltage electrical products. The Decree (in Portuguese) is available at:

DETAILS

2. The National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil issued Decree No. 335/2011 to require mandatory information on the packaging of various low voltage electrical products in Portuguese. The packaging must contain company name, address, company registration number or individual registration number of the supplier, packer or assembler, and voltage information in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 97.280/1988.

3. The Decree sets out that parts and components intended for the conduction of electricity must not contain ferrous alloys, while screws, rivets, springs and other parts or components for the setting of conductive parts to the body of the product may contain ferrous alloys.

4. Wholesalers and retailers of connectors, wires, cables, flexible cords and any other low voltage fixtures that can be sold in parts must keep the packaging of the product available at their establishments.

5. The Decree prohibits the manufacture, importation and sale of tubular fluorescent lamps of 18 watts and 36 watts with a T8 diameter tube to be marked as lamps of 20 watts and 40 watts. Any lamp base originally designed for tungsten halogen lamps and LED lamps for use at less than 50 volts, type G4, GU4, GY4, GX5.3, GU5.3, G6.35, GY6.35, GU7 or G53, must not be used with tungsten halogen lamps and LED lamps with rated voltage at above 50 volts.

6. The compliance dates of the requirements will be 29 February 2012 for the manufacture and import of such products; 31 August 2012 for the domestic sale of such products by manufacturers and importers, and 28 February 2013 for the domestic sale of such products by all other parties.

7. For details of the above requirements, traders are advised to consult their importers in Brazil and/or the above Brazilian Decree.
