Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 562/2011

US : CPSC granted a Petition requesting for Standards restricting Cadmium in Children's Products

The trade was informed via Commercial Information Circular No. 376/2010 that the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) invited comments on a petition it received requesting for standards restricting cadmium in children's products, especially toy metal jewelry. The CPSC issued in the Federal Register (FR) of 16 September 2011 a notice to announce that the CPSC granted the petition on 6 September 2011 and directed its staff to begin drafting a proposed rule unless a voluntary standard for cadmium in children's jewelry or a voluntary standard for cadmium in children's toy jewelry is published by the ASTM International (ASTM) within three months. The CPSC staff was also directed to, if the ASTM's voluntary standard is published within this timeframe, assess the adequacy of the voluntary standard and whether there was substantial compliance with the voluntary standard and based on these assessments make a recommendation on the disposition of this petition within nine months. The FR notice is available at:
