Commercial Information Circular No. 552/2011

US : Illinois State to Require Lead Warning Labels on certain Children's Products

The US State of Illinois enacted a law on 26 August 2011 to amend the Illinois Lead Poisoning Prevention Act to require children's jewellery, child care articles and toys containing paint must bear a warning label if the total lead content of any component part of these items exceeds 40 parts per million (ppm) but is less than 600 ppm by total weight or a lower standard for lead content as may be established by the federal or state law or regulation.

DETAILS

2.The trade was informed via Commercial Information Circular No. 206/2010 of the proposal of the Illinois State to require for lead warning labels for the above mentioned products. The new law of the Illinois State further clarifies the coverage of the lead warning label requirements. The warning statement is also amended to contain at least the following: "WARNING: CONTAINS LEAD. MAY BE HARMFUL IF EATEN OR CHEWED. COMPLIES WITH FEDERAL STANDARDS."
