Commercial Information Circular No. 446/2011
Brazil : Energy Efficiency Standards for Certain Products
The Brazilian Government has issued four Inter-ministerial Decrees (IDs) to establish energy efficiency standards for certain domestically manufactured or imported products, including air conditioners, gas water heaters, gas cookers and ovens, and refrigerators and freezers. Details are set forth below.
(i) Energy efficiency standards for Air Conditioners
| Products covered and energy efficiency standards: | Minimum energy efficiency coefficiency levels for window type air conditioners will range from 2.30 w/w to ³ 2.78 w/w for air-conditioners with different cooling capacity while that for split type air conditioners (including floor/ceiling type and cassette type) will be 2.60 w/w. |

(ii) Energy efficiency standards for Gas Water Heaters
| Products covered and energy efficiency standards: | Minimum levels of energy efficiency for instant type water heaters will be 76% and that for storage type (with a storage tank volume of up to 250 litres) will be 72%. |

(iii) Energy efficiency standards for Gas Cookers and Ovens
| Products covered and energy efficiency standards: | Minimum levels of energy efficiency for cooker hobs will be 57% and that for ovens will be 37%. |

(iv) Energy efficiency standards for Refrigerators and Freezers
| Products covered and energy efficiency standards: | Maximum consumption levels for refrigerators and freezers will be ranging from 1.113 C/Cp for minibar to 1.162 C/Cp for chest type freezers and 1.174 C/Cp for frost-free refrigerators. |

2.For all products covered by the new energy efficiency standards as mentioned above (except split type air conditioners), the compliance dates will be 31 December 2011 for the manufacture and import of such products; 31 December 2012 for the domestic sale of such products by manufacturers and importers; and 31 December 2013 for the domestic sale of such products by wholesalers and retailers.
3.For split type air conditioners (including floor/ceiling type and cassette type), the compliance dates will be 31 December 2012 for the manufacture and import of such products; 31 December 2013 for the domestic sale of such products by manufacturers and importers; and 31 December 2014 for the domestic sale of such products by wholesalers and retailers.
4.For details, traders are advised to consult their importers in Brazil and/or the above Brazilian IDs (in Portuguese).
