Canada : Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations

The Canadian Department of Health (Health Canada) published a notice in the Canada Gazette Part II of 8 December 2010 to introduce the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations under the Hazardous Products Act (HPA). The Regulations further strengthen the safety requirements for cribs and cradles and introduce new requirements for stand-alone bassinets. In order to further improve the protection of the health and safety of young children using cribs, cradles and bassinets, the Health Canada has amended the former Cribs and Cradles Regulations under the HPA. The new Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations further strengthen the safety requirements for cribs and cradles and introduce new requirements for stand-alone bassinets, which were previously not regulated in Canada. The new Regulations include the following major modifications: 

  • incorporating requirements for bassinets,

  • establishing the same requirements for portable and standard cribs,

  • establishing a minimum side height barrier of 230mm for cribs, cradles and bassinets,

  • adding warning requirements for cribs and cradles,

  • amending the referenced flammability standard,

  • eliminating toeholds from cribs,

  • including a record keeping requirements,

  • clarifying the definitions of movable crib sides, 

  • aligning the total lead limit for cribs, cradles and bassinets with that of the US, i.e. 90mg/kg, and

  • aligning aspects of the corner post requirements with that those of the US.
