Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 501/2010
US : CPSC's Proposal to amend the Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published in the Federal Register (FR) of 1 November 2010 a proposed rule to amend its standard for flammability of mattresses and mattress pads. The FR notice is available at: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-27504.pdf. Interested parties may submit comments to the CPSC by 18 January 2011.
DETAILS
-
The Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads, Title 16, Code of Federal Regulations, part 1632 (16 CFR part 1632), sets forth a test to determine the ignition resistance of a mattress or mattress pad when exposed to a lighted cigarette placed at specified locations on the surface of a mattress (or mattress pad). Since the ignition source cigarette specified in the standard for use in the mattress standard's performance tests is no longer being produced, the CPSC is proposing to amend the mattress flammability standard (16 CFR part 1632) to specify a standard reference material cigarette (SRM 1196) as the ignition source for testing, which is developed by and is available for purchase from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Please refer to the FR notice for details of the proposed rule.
