Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 344/2010

US : CPSC's Updated Laboratory Test Manual for the "Standards for the Flammability of Children's Sleepwear"

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently updated its laboratory test manual for the "Standards for the Flammability of Children's Sleepwear" (the Standards) codified at Title 16, Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 1615 and 1616 (16 CFR Parts 1615 and 1616).

  1. The Standards state the flammability performance required for sleepwear sized larger than 9 months to 14. It is required that children's sleepwear garments that are not tight-fitting follow specific sampling plans and be tested for flammability performance at several production stages. The test manual is not the complete mandatory standard, but a reference guide designed to assist with the testing procedures specified in the Standards. It identifies the test equipment used to perform the testing in accordance with the Standards and provides information regarding the measurements for tight-fitting children's sleepwear by size. Other details including sampling plans, preparation and procedure, test report and certification, recordkeeping, and definitions and exemptions are set out in the manual which is available at;
    http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/sleepwearlab.pdf.

  1. As specified in the test manual, it was prepared by CPSC staff and has not been reviewed or approved by, and may not necessarily represent the views of, the CPSC.
