US : Laws to Limit the level of Cadmium in Children's Jewelry

The US States of Minnesota and Connecticut passed laws to limit the level of Cadmium in Children's jewelry respectively in May and June 2010, being the first two states to finalize such laws.

DETAILS

  1. The new law of the US State of Minnesota prohibits the sale of children's jewelry for children of six years of age or younger that contains cadmium in excess of 75 parts per million (ppm) on any surface coating or in any accessible substrate material of metal or plastic components. The requirement will be effective for manufacturers and wholesalers on 1 January 2011, and for retailers on 1 March 2011.   2. The new law of the US State of Connecticut prohibits the manufacture, sale, offering for sale or distribution of children's jewelry for children of twelve years of age or younger containing cadmium in excess of 75 ppm.   3. Traders are strongly advised to seek clarifications with their importers in the US in order to comply with the necessary requirements.
