DETAILS
-
To provide consumers with health information, the Mexican Government has issued the new Mexican standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010 to amend labelling requirements for pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages. These amended labelling requirements apply to all domestically-produced and imported pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages.
-
As specified in Section 4 of the Gazette notice, the information provided on labels for pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages must be true and described and presented in a way in which the consumer is not misled as to the nature and characteristics of the product. Covered products must include at least the following information on their labels: (i) name or generic name of the product; (ii) list of ingredients; (iii) net quantity and drained quantity; (iv) name and fiscal domicile (for imported products, the name, trade name or corporate name and fiscal domicile of the party responsible for the product must be included); (v) country of origin; (vi) lot identification; (vii) date of expiry or optimum date of consumption; and (viii) nutrition information. All required information must be in Spanish, without prejudice to additionally expressing this information in another language.
-
Details of the labelling requirements are set out in the Gazette notice. As the requirements are quite technical, traders are strongly recommended to seek clarifications with their importers in Mexico in order to comply with the necessary requirements.
