Canada : Elimination of Tariffs on a Number of Manufacturing Inputs and Machinery and Equipment

The Canadian Department of Finance (DoF) published a news release on 9 March 2010 which announced the elimination of 1,541 tariffs on manufacturing inputs and machinery and equipment, as one of the measures in the Canadian Budget 2010 to lower the cost of production for creating jobs and growing the economy. The majority of these 1,541 tariffs have already been eliminated on 5 March 2010, with the remainder being gradually eliminated no later than 1 January 2015. To facilitate the implementation of the above measure, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) published its Tariff Notice – TN-49 dated 4 March 2010 advising certain amendments to the Canadian Customs Tariff (CT). The tariff notice is available on the website of the CBSA at http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2010/tn49-eng.html. The Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) rate of duty for a number of items, covering CT Chapters 25, 27-29, 32, 38-41, 43, 44, 51-56, 58, 68, 70-74, 76, 78, 80-85 and 90, listed in the first paragraph of the above tariff notice has been reduced to zero. The MFN rate of duty for items, covering CT Chapters 28, 29, 32, 39, 44, 51-56, 58-60, 68, 70, 76, 84 and 85, listed in the second paragraph has been reduced to the rate as specified and will be further reduced to zero by 1 January 2015. These tariff reductions have come into effect on 5 March 2010.
