Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 619/2009

US : California's New Energy Efficiency Standards for Televisions

The US California Energy Commission (CEC) approved on 18 November 2009 making amendments to the state's Applicance Efficiency Regulations (AER) in order to establish new energy efficiency standards for televisions. A copy (pdf format) of CEC's press release is appended to this circular for reference.

DETAILS

  1.
  2. California's AER was established in 1976 to reduce the state's energy consumption. The standards within AER apply to appliances that are sold or offered for sale in California, except those sold wholesale in California for final retail sale outside the state and those designed and sold exclusively for use in recreational vehicles or other mobile equipment. The current set of AER is available on the CEC website at http://www.energy.ca.gov/appliances/2009regulations/index.html. The AER is updated periodically to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods. The CEC now approves to amend the AER to establish new energy efficiency standards for televisions.

  3. Under the new standards, new televisions with a screen size 58 inches or smaller sold in California should consume 33% less electricity after 1 January 2011 and 49% less electricity by 2013. The standards will not affect existing televisions that consumers already own or the televisions currently on retail store shelves. Stores will not be prohibited from selling existing stock of older televisions after the standards go into effect. The CEC has prepared a list of frequently asked questions about the new standards which is available at http://www.energy.ca.gov/appliances/tv_faqs.html. Other relevant information of the new standards is available at
    http://www.energy.ca.gov/appliances/2009_tvregs/index.html.
