Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 101/2007
US : Proposal for Amending the Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a proposal in the Federal Register (FR) notice on 27 February 2007 for amending the existing flammability standard for clothing textiles. Interested parties are invited by the CPSC to provide written comments on the proposal by 14 May 2007.
DETAILS
- The existing flammability standard for general wearing apparel is provided under Title 16 CFR part 1610 - the Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles ("the Standard") which was originally issued in 1953. The Standard provides methods of testing the flammability of clothing and textiles intended to be used for clothing, establishes three classes of flammability, sets forth the requirements which textiles shall meet to be classified, and warns against the use of those textiles which have burning characteristics unsuitable for clothing. The CPSC does not intend to change any essential parts of the Standard but is proposing to amend it to better reflect changes in consumer garment care practices/technologies, and to make it easier to understand. The proposed revisions cover areas such as definitions/terminologies, flammability tester, refurbishing methods, test procedures, test result interpretation, reporting changes, etc.
- For details of the proposal, including the full text of the revised Title 16 CFR part 1610, traders may refer to the above mentioned FR notice which could be downloaded at :
