Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 318/2005
US : New Country of Origin Labelling Requirement for Sock Packaging
A new country of origin labelling requirement for sock packaging is expected to become effective in the US in March 2006.
DETAILS
- The new origin labelling requirement is stipulated in the Miscellaneous Trade and Technical Corrections Act of 2004 (¡§the Act¡¨), which was signed into law in US on 3 December 2004. According to the Act, as regards socks provided for in subheading 6115.92.90, 6115.93.90, 6115.99.18, 6111.20.60, 6111.30.50, or 6111.90.50 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the US, the English name of the country of origin should be marked:
- legibly, indelibly and permanently;
- on the front of the package;
- adjacent to the size designation of the product; and
- in such a manner as to be clearly legible, conspicuous, and readily accessible to the ultimate consumer.
- However, any package that contains several different types of goods and includes socks described in paragraph 2 above will not be subject to the new requirement.
- As stated in the Act, the new requirement will take effect on the date that is 15 months after the date of enactment of the Act (i.e. on approximately 3 March 2006). For details, traders may refer to the relevant parts of the Act which are extracted at the Annex (pdf format).
