Ref : EIC 111/4
23 August
1997
Dear Sirs,
Commercial
Information Circular No. 125/97
USA
: Country of Origin Marking Requirement
The US Customs Service
announced in the Federal Register of 20 August 1997 that the country of
origin marking requirement has been eased for imported articles bearing
words indicating the name of a geographic location other than the country
of origin of the article.
- For the aforementioned
imported articles, currently the marking of the actual country of origin
must appear in close proximity and in comparable size lettering to those
words indicating the non-origin geographic location, preceded by the
words "Made in" , "Product of" or other words of
similar meaning. With effect from 19 September 1997, this requirement
will apply only if the name of the other geographic location
may mislead or deceive the ultimate purchaser as to the actual country
of origin. A copy of the notice is appended to this circular for reference.
