Commercial Information Circulars

Ref : EIC 426/4

16 February 1996

Dear Sirs,

Commercial Information Circular No. 18/96

Mexico : New Labelling Rules for Textiles and Apparel;

Food and Beverages; and General Merchandise

We have received information that on 24 January 1996, Mexico published three sets of standards on labelling requirements for textiles and apparel; food and beverages; and general merchandise. In general, labelling is required to be done in Spanish prior to importation into Mexico and information such as country of origin, quantity, trademark and name of importer and/or producer has to be included.

  1. The new labelling rules have staggered implementation periods to allow industries to adapt to the new regulations. The labelling rules for textiles and apparel will take effect from 14 February 1996 whereas the new labelling requirements for general merchandise and food and beverages will take effect on 1 November 1996.
  2. According to information available, we have attempted a table summarising the labelling requirements (Appendix). An unofficial English translation of the labelling rules for textiles and apparel is also available for perusal at the Americas (Commercial Relations) Branch of the Trade Department on 18/F, Trade Department Tower, 700 Nathan Road, Kowloon (Tel : 2398 5405.)
