Dear Sirs,
Commercial Information Circular No. 421/2009
Notice to Exporters : Series 1 (USA) No. 6/2009
US : Labelling of Textiles and Clothing Products Derived from Bamboo
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a publication entitled "How to Avoid Bamboozling Your Customers" on 11 August 2009 concerning the proper labelling of clothing and textile articles derived from bamboo. A copy (pdf format) of the publication is appended to this circular.
-
According to the publication, only textiles and clothing products made directly with bamboo fiber — often called "mechanically processed bamboo" — can be labelled as being made from bamboo fiber. Products of manufactured fiber for which bamboo is the plant source should be labelled with reference to the proper generic name for the fiber, e.g., "rayon" or "rayon made from bamboo".
-
Traders are strongly advised to seek clarifications with their importers in the US to comply with the necessary requirements and to ensure that relevant products are marketed in ways that are truthful, non-deceptive, and in compliance with US laws.
- For more information on the US labelling requirements for textiles and clothing products, traders may make reference to the "Fact for Business" web page in FTC's website at: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/menus/business/textile.shtm.
