Hong Kong's Values of Imports by Major Principal Commodity, 2023

The top three principal commodities in terms of imports values in 2023 were the same as that in 2022, namely "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" with imports values of HK$2,023.8 billion (accounting for 43.6% in share), followed by "telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment" with imports values of HK$555.2 billion (12.0% in share) and "office machines and automatic data processing machines" with imports values of HK$323.5 billion (7.0% in share). Comparing with 2022, the import values of these top three principal commodities all went down, at the rates of 10.1%, 0.2% and 22.0% respectively.

"Miscellaneous manufactured articles"1, "non-metallic mineral manufactures" and "power generating machinery and equipment" ranked the fourth to the sixth principal import commodities in 2023 with import values of HK$318.8 billion (corresponding to 6.9% in share), HK$168.9 billion (3.6% in share) and HK$150.4 billion (3.2% in share) respectively. When compared with 2022, the import values of these principal commodities grew by 2.4%, 1.6% and 30.3% respectively.

The other principal import commodities in 2023 included "professional, scientific and controlling instruments and apparatus" with import values of HK$132.2 billion (corresponding to 2.8% in share), "photographic apparatus, equipment and supplies and optical goods; watches and clocks" with import values of HK$107.1 billion (2.3% in share), "petroleum, petroleum products and related materials" with import values of HK$81.5 billion (1.8% in share) and the "textile and clothing" grouping2,3 (a combination of two principal import commodities) with import values of HK$76.5 billion (1.6% in share). When compared with 2022, the import values of "professional, scientific and controlling instruments and apparatus" and "textile and clothing" grouping decreased by 11.7% and 7.1% respectively, whereas that of "photographic apparatus, equipment and supplies and optical goods; watches and clocks" and "petroleum, petroleum products and related materials" rose by 2.0% and 7.4% respectively.

1 Among "miscellaneous manufactured articles", percentage share of "jewellery, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares, and other articles of precious or semi-precious materials" in Hong Kong's imports in 2023 was the largest (3.7%).

2 The "textile and clothing" grouping is a combination of two principal commodities whereas the others stated in this graph refer to one single principal commodity. Readers are advised to interpret the figures with caution, especially in the order of ranking.
