Press Releases Hong Kong, China attends the
60th Session of ESCAP in Shanghai

A Hong Kong, China delegation led by the Financial Secretary, Mr Henry Tang,
will attend the 60th Plenary Session of the Economic and Social Commission for
Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to be held in Shanghai from 22 - 28 April.
As a subsidiary body of
the United Nations, ESCAP conducts researches and surveys, and initiates measures
to facilitate the economic development of the Asia-Pacific region, mainly through
the collection, evaluation and dissemination of economic, technological and
statistical information of the region.
Hong Kong, China is an associate member of the ESCAP and has been participating
in its work, in particular in the Committee on Statistics, the Typhoon Committee
and the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development.
The 60th Session of ESCAP
is a commemorative occasion and will take place at its birthplace, Shanghai,
rather than the usual venue of Bangkok. The theme of the 60th Session of ESCAP
is "Meeting the challenges in an era of globalization by strengthening
regional development cooperation". The Session covers two segments, the
Senior Officials Segment from April 22 to 24 and the Ministerial Segment from
April 26 to 28. The Financial Secretary will attend the Ministerial Segment
on April 26.
Other members of the Hong
Kong, China delegation include Director of the Office of the Government of the
HKSAR in Beijing, Mr Bowen Leung Po-wing; Commissioner for Census and Statistics,
Mr Frederick Ho Wing Huen; Government Economist, Mr Tang Kwong Yiu; Deputy Secretary
for Commerce, Industry & Technology, Mr Raymond Young Lap Moon, and Assistant
Director-General of Trade and Industry, Miss Jenny Yip Kam Ching.
